Lake Ralph Hall permit approved

A long-anticipated plan for a new lake in southeastern Fannin County – Lake Ralph Hall – received state approval today. The lake will serve primarily as a source of municipal water for North Texas. Additionally, the lake will re-purpose the ecologically damaged North Sulphur River watershed and is expected to provide opportunities for recreation, tourism and economic development for the area.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality announced its approval of the Upper Trinity Regional Water District’s application to build the lake today. Lake Ralph Hall is the first major new water supply reservoir to be approved in almost 30 years by the agency. The application for the permit to develop this new water supply reservoir was filed in Sept. 2003.

“We are delighted TCEQ approved the permit for Lake Ralph Hall,” said Thomas E. Taylor, executive director of Upper Trinity Regional Water District. “Lake Ralph Hall will help provide a reliable water supply to families and businesses in the North Texas region for many generations,” Taylor said.

The proposed Lake Ralph Hall would cover about 11,200 acres, an area about the size of Lake Grapevine. Once complete, the lake should provide 30-45 million gallons of water daily to Denton County and parts of Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Grayson and Wise Counties.
