Last night, State Sen. Bob Deuell experienced a demi-version of what Mitt Romney endured in 2012. He won most of the geographic territory, but not the most votes.
Bob Hall, the retired businessman who defeated incumbent Deuell in the race to be the Republican nominee for the Texas Senate District 2 seat, did so by a whisker-thin margin. Hall collected 18,230 votes to 17,930 for Deuell.
That 300-vote margin came in part from Hall’s success in the southern part of the district and in the suburbs of Dallas.
Texas Senate District 2 is a hybrid, rural-suburban demarcation that stretches from the freeways of Mesquite to the quiet meanderings of the North Sulphur River. The district includes all of Delta, Fannin, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Rains, Rockwall and Van Zandt counties. Significantly, District 2 also includes part of eastern Dallas County.
Hall relocated to Texas from Florida in 2009 and makes his home in Edgewood, located north of Canton in Van Zandt County. Deuell has long made his home in Greenville, in Hunt County.
Deuell won Delta, Fannin, Hopkins, Hunt, Rains and Rockwall counties. Deuell won those counties 9,896-7,236.
Hall won his home county and neighboring Kaufman County, as well as those parts of the district in Dallas County. Hall won those counties 10,994-8,034.
