Supporters of Curtis “Topper” Gray plan today to remember the Greenville man who allegedly was shot and killed late last month by a local attorney.

The Greenville Branch of the NAACP has a press conference scheduled this morning, and a vigil is set this evening, in connection with Gray’s July 30 death.

Meanwhile a special prosecutor was sworn-in Wednesday to oversee the case against Royal Lynn Mullins, who has been charged with one count of murder.

NAACP Greenville Branch President Monica Fisher said a press conference about the case is scheduled for 10 a.m. today on the steps of the Hunt County Courthouse.

“Then we have a vigil planned between 8 and 9 p.m. on Spencer Street, between Texas and Walnut streets,” Fisher said, adding the events are planned to raise public awareness of Gray’s murder.

During a Wednesday morning hearing in the 354th District Court, Judge Richard A. Beacom swore-in Rockwall County Assistant District Attorney Damita Sangermano as a special prosecutor.

Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda L. Culpepper said Wednesday that her office’s investigation into the case is just beginning and that it was too early to comment on the process.

Hunt County District Attorney Noble D. Walker Jr. had filed a motion with Beacom August 5, asking to recuse himself from the case against Mullins, and seeking the appointment of a district attorney pro tem.

Walker indicated that Mullins is a current member of the Hunt County Bar Association as a defense attorney and had worked alongside Walker’s staff.
