Volunteers needed to honor military

It is time to pay tribute to the military in Delta County for the Memorial Day weekend. The American Legion Red Henderson Post 483, of Cooper, Texas, will again be placing flags on several cemeteries in the County.

“It should be a bit easier this year with all the recent rains,” noted Post Commander Gary Thompson, who has ordered 200 more American flags with pointed tips. “We have added the two cemeteries in Klondike for this year too.” In the past volunteers needed hammers for the dry land, and this year instead they might need mud boots.

The program commencing the day Saturday, May 23 begins at 9 a.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper, Texas at FM 1529.

“It is our honor to post these flags at the grave site of all of those who served in the armed forces for this great nation. We do this for those who served with honor, pride, and sense of duty for our nation,” he added.

The Commander said there will be several team leaders to lead each group to their assigned area for the approximately 15 cemeteries. It usually doesn’t take more than an hour and if more volunteers join their efforts it will take less time.

He is still seeking a team for Klondike. Anyone that has helped in the past please call me at 903-439-8500 so team leaders can be established.

“Those of you that have helped with this honorable act of kindness, I’m sure can testify to the humbling feeling you have received for helping each year. Thanks to each of you for your support,” said Commander Thompson. Volunteers are also needed to take the flags down on Tuesday, May 28.
