Northeast Texas water customers can expect a rate hike next year. The North Texas Municipal Water District’s (NTMWD) 2017 budget raises rates across its 10-county area by 24 cents, to $2.53 per 1,000 gallons.

The rate hike is the water district’s response to population growth and the need to replace old infrastructure. NTMWD expects the population of its service area to double by mid-century.  The district currently serves 1.6 million customers in 90 communities.

Along with population growth is the district’s aging infrastructure. Much of the equipment and materials  are at least 60 years old and, the district says, in need of replacement before they start to wear out. NTMWD also plans to fund several capital projects in the next decade and a half. Projects include the $1.1 billion Lower Bois D’Arc Creek Reservoir Project, projected to be in place by 2022, and the half-billion-dollar Leonard Water Treatment Plant, which is expected to be operational by the early 2030s.

The district has published detailsabout its fiscal year 2017 budget.
