Florida-based GEO Group, the management company in charge of operations at the Fannin County Jail says it will end its business with county on June 19.
That also means terminating the contracts of all 121 employees at the jail. But County Judge Spanky Carter told the Herald-Democrat that several contractors are interested in taking over operations, so he is not yet concerned with the employees keeping their jobs.
However, if no buyer is found by June 19, or if the eventual buyer chose not to retain the staff, the sheriff’s department will assume management of the 459-inmate jail and Fannin County would assume the cost of the employee contracts.
County officials did not have what running the operations and payroll at the jail would be when this story was published.
GEO Group operates 15 for-profit correctional facilities and six residential re-entry facilities in Texas. The Fannin County Jail is the only one in Northeast Texas.
