The Tyler Independent School District tabled a decision over whether to rename Robert E. Lee High School.
Earlier this week the board opened public comment on the matter. During Monday night’s board meeting about 75 residents weighed in.
Supporters of the name said the confederacy is part of the South’s heritage and should not be altered. Opponents said the name evokes a racist past that does not represent the community as a whole.
When the public comment period ended, the board sidestepped the expected vote. The discussion has been added to and removed from the school board agenda numerous times.
The board did not say when it plans to revisit the issue. It has until October to come to a before the cost to change it or amend it goes up.
