It's Official: Call It Bois d'Arc Lake

The North Texas Municipal Water District voted Thursday to change the name of North Texas Municipal Lake to Bois d'Arc Lake, just as numerous residents of Fannin County have been calling for.

Water District Board President John Sweeden made the new name official at the board's monthly meeting in Wylie Thursday afternoon.

But the Water District's name will not be entirely gone from the lake's moniker. The board bandied for about 30 minutes how to maintain its name on the lake property. Ultimately members agreed to call it Bois d'Arc Lake but allow for signs and official communications from the Water District to include language identifying the lake as a North Texas Municipal Water District site.

The vote to change the name was nearly unanimous following months of pleas from Fannin residents to do so. Board members repeatedly defended their April decision to name the lake after the agency, saying it was meant to honor all 13 municipalities served by the district. Board Director Darrell Grooms was the only dissenting vote. Grooms wanted to keep the name North Texas Municipal Lake because he felt it was more inclusive to all the communities the district serves.
