On Friday morning, the City of Commerce released a statement regarding a multi-agency law enforcement action that shut down Park Street for much of the day on Tuesday.
Police responded to a 5:22 a.m. call reporting shots fired in the 1700 block of Park Street, they said. The 1700 block of Park Street is a long, mostly residential block just north of City Park. The female caller reported being shot at in their home by a 54-year-old man, police said. Witnesses told police the man was inside a residence on the block, officials said.
Commerce police established a perimeter around the residence and tried to contact the suspect, they said. Commerce police also sought and obtained a search warrant for the residence and an arrest warrant for the suspect, they said. A Texas Department of Public Safety tactical team arrived on scene to execute the warrant, and people living in the immediate vicinity were evacuated from their homes.
The statement from the City of Commerce made no mention of any arrest. “The warrant was safely executed by DPS with no injuries,” the statement said.
“The Commerce Police Department would like to thank the Texas Rangers, Texas DPS SRT-Team, State Troopers and others within the DPS organization for their help and professionalism in bringing a peaceful end to this matter,” the statement said. “A special thanks to the Hunt County Constable’s Office, American Medical Response and Texas A&M University-Commerce Police Department for their assistance during this operation. We would also like to thank the residents that were displaced during this operation for their understanding and patience,” it said.
