'Mr. Mayo, Come Out Now:' The Strange Story Of Mayo's Grave

Carol Taylor, chairman of the Hunt County Historical Commission, relates the story of how Texas A&M-Commerce founder William L. Mayo came to be buried on campus, and the circumstances of the burial.  His widow, Etta Booth Mayo, wanted to ensure that his body would be undisturbed and so she had concrete poured over the casket.  At the end of the graveside service, Commerce concrete contractor William J. McKitttrick announced,  “Mr. Mayo, if you are ever going to come out, come out now. I am going to cover you with concrete.”
