A Kaufman County woman has been arrested and charged with felony theft in connection with the sale of timber in Hopkins County. A news release today from the Texas A&M Forest Service says Frances Charline Lee Cole, age 51, of Kaufman, was arrested last Wednesday. Law enforcement officials say Cole received $8,000 from a logging company in exchange for timber Cole did not have the right to sell. The statement said Cole deceived the logging company by showing them paperwork suggesting that she owned a 42-acre tract in Hopkins County. Officials say the document was only an agreement to sell the land to Cole and that Cole later backed out of the purchase. No details about the logging company were mentioned in the statement. Cole has been charged with theft of more than $2,500 and less than $30,000. No other details about the location or status of Cole’s detention were released.
In other news from Hopkins County, Texas Department of Public Safety officials have released the name of the man who died in a two-vehicle accident Saturday night. 27-year-old Tyler Chester of Sulphur Springs died at the scene of the crash, which happened Saturday around 10 p.m. on State Highway 19, about 5 miles south of Interstate 30. Officials say Chester was traveling north in the southbound lane of SH 19. A 68-year-old woman from Emory, Wilma Lane, was taken by helicopter to a regional hospital Saturday night for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
