Hunt County drops property tax rate to mitigate rising property values

County commissioners made the change to reflect a "no new revenue" goal for the upcoming fiscal year's property taxes.

  • In Hunt County, the rate of property taxes will be going down for the fifth consecutive year. The move was made to mitigate the effect of rapidly rising property values across the region. The Greenville Herald Banner reports the new rate is about 36 cents per $100 of appraised value. That’s down from last year’s rate of about 43 cents. The rate reflects a “no new revenue” plan by county commissioners, who are seeking to bring in roughly the same amount of tax revenue as was collected last year. The vote was unanimous.
  • In Rockwall County yesterday, a large structure fire broke out at an apartment complex in Fate. The fire destroyed one building at the Prose Apartments, located near Interstate 30 and FM 551. The City of Fate said in a release that the building was unoccupied and there were no injuries. However, evacuations were held in the nearby Williamsburg development. Fire departments from Rockwall, Hunt and Collin counties helped put out the blaze. Officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • In sports, Texas A&M University-Commerce announced that former Lions cornerback Kader Kohou has made the final roster of the Miami Dolphins. NFL teams made their final preseason roster cuts yesterday. Kohou was not drafted, but signed a three-year contract with Miami following a strong preseason effort. If Kohou sees game time, he would be the first Lion to play in a regular-season NFL game since Kevin Mathis played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2006. The Dolphins begin the 2022 regular season on Sunday September 11 in Miami against New England.
