GISD students will learn two languages in school starting next year.

The Greenville ISD says it will begin a bilingual program starting next school year.

The Herald Banner reported today that Bowie Elementary School will kick off two bilingual classes, in English and Spanish, with the next incoming Kindergarten class. Children will learn reading and writing in their first language, but all students will get science and social studies in Spanish and all math in English. So-called language buddies will help students learn the other language.

Just over half of Greenville ISD’s students are Hispanic, according to the TexasTEA.

The ISD plans several information sessions for parents, beginning in April.
