Carol Taylor, chairman of the Hunt County Historical Commission, says Bass Reeves, a former slave, became the first U.S. deputy marshal in Texas and may have been the model for the fictional Lone Ranger radio and TV character. Reeves arrested more than 3,000 fugitives, many of whom went to a federal prison in Detroit, where radio station WXYZ originated "The Lone Ranger" as a radio show in 1933.
