Tax Rate

Commerce Mayor Wyman Williams says the City Council received a report from Acting City Manager Ned Muse that the city actually saw an increase in sales-tax and property tax revenue during the 2019-20 fiscal year, just ended, despite the coronavirus lockdowns.  One reason is a new state law that allows cities to receive sales taxes from online purchases.

Commerce Mayor Wyman Williams says the City Council has not yet set the 2020-21 property tax rate, but he and the council do not expect that there will be a tax increase.  The mayor says the city is actually running ahead of its budget for property tax collections and sales taxes this year, despite the coronavirus shut down.

Commerce Mayor Wyman Williams reports the Fire Department has received a $122,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to improve training and readiness.  And the mayor says, because property values have increased, revenue to the city has increased, while the tax rate has remained the same, making a 3% across-the-board salary increase for city employees possible.

Commerce Mayor Wyman Williams explains the city's budget and tax rate for the 2018-19 fiscal year.  The city council held a hearing on the tax rate Tuesday night.  The rate is expected to remain at 82 cents per $100 property value, but revenues to the city will increase because of higher property values.

Fannin County Commissioners are trying to continue a decade-long trend of lowering the county tax rate. The Commissioners proposed the fiscal 2018 budget Wednesday.
