July sales tax collections down for most of region

By Scott Harvey

– Sales were down in May for most of the region, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Texas Comptroller's office.

The July sales tax rebate payments represent a city's portion of sales taxes collected at businesses in May and reported to the Comptroller's office in June.

The City of Commerce will receive a July sales tax payment of $86,837, representing an increase of 1.95 percent from July, 2008. Royse City was one of just a few other cities to show an increase as well, at 1.78 percent.

Greenville collected $433,743 in July. That, however, was a decrease of 4.95 percent.

Elsewhere throughout the region, Sulphur Springs experienced a 9.31 percent decrease, sales in Paris fell 7.91 percent and the City of Bonham collected 7.69 percent less in sales tax payments in July, 2009 compared to July, 2008.
