Council working toward street improvement program

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The Commerce City Council is moving forward with plans to improve city streets, giving City Manager Dion Miller authority to proceed with contract negotiations for a street inventory and pavement assessment project.

The contract with Dallas-based Berkhoff, Hendricks and Conway, estimated to run between $35,000 and $40,000, would provide services to determine a capital improvement program for the work and help prioritize street and drainage refurbishing needs.

The money would come from the $3 million in bonds approved by citizens for street improvements in May, 2008. Currently, a drainage study is being conducted at a cost near $75,000, and is scheduled for completion by September.

Upon contract approval, the council plans to appoint an ad hoc task force of between nine and 15 citizens who will make recommendations for the use of the bonds. They could also assist in the development and implementation of an appropriate preventative maintenance program.
