Officials warn caution while using fireworks

By Brad Kellar

– With fireworks going on sale Thursday throughout Texas ahead of the July 4 holiday, officials are reminding residents to play it safe.

The use of fireworks is illegal inside city limits unless it's done by display and a permit is awarded.

Hunt County Emergency Management Coordinator Richard Hill says those outside city limits in the unincorporated areas need to be especially mindful.

"Have either fire extinguishers, water hoses, or have the grass cut very short," Hill said. "Preferable use them on a parking lot or around the lake areas where it is legal to shoot fireworks where we don't start any grass fires."

Hill says the dry conditions can make it even more likely for a fire to ignite from firework use.

He says if those conditions continue, we may seen a burn ban enacted.
