Nevada Community Braves: 2013 football preview

It’s not that Community High School’s football team is a bad one. It’s just that they play in one of the tougher 3A districts in Texas.

With big, bad Princeton and Melissa – along with scrappy Bonham and Anna – there’s not much room left at the table for the Braves, who’d probably be happy just to sneak into the playoffs this year.

Case in point: In 2012, Community started out a promising 4-2. Then the Braves dropped all four district games and missed the playoffs. There’s just no room for error in 12-3A.

To turn things around, Community is counting on some experienced players to lead the way. Junior quarterback Jordan Graham (6-2, 190) is a three-year starter who made second-team all-district last year. Senior Corey Rogers is a threat to run or catch the ball. Clearing a path for the Braves will be offensive lineman James Weimer (5-10, 240).

Defense is where Community must answer more questions. Defensive backs Collin Croft (6-1, 185) and Connor Wiser (5-10, 165) will need some help from the front and the linebacking crew to prevent the big play. The Braves gave up 33 points per game in 2012.

It will take some doing for Community to reach the postseason. The Braves’ two home games in district play are also the district favorites (Melissa and Princeton).

Head coach: Bryan O’Neal. 2012 record: 4-6, 0-4 in District 12-3A. Top players: OL james Weimer, Sr., QB Jordan Graham, Jr.; RB/WR Corey Rogers, Sr.; DB Collin Croft, Jr.; DB Connor Wiser; DB Chae Dexter; DB Dillon McCormick.
