TAMUC Referendum Passes With 80% Of The Student Vote

Athletic Fee Referendum Passes

A referendum that proposed an increase to the intercollegiate athletic fee for Texas A&M University-Commerce students has passed.

2,095 students submitted a vote on the measure. 408 students voted in opposition; 1,687 voted in favor.

The referendum sought an increase of $21.01 over the current $10.99 that students currently pay in fees per semester credit hour specifically allocated to intercollegiate athletics, bringing the new total to $32. This would place the athletic fee at the same level as the fee charged to students of West Texas A&M, a Lone Star Conference rival, according to this university-produced infographic.

Proponents of the measure, which included some university administrators, hoped to take advantage of new revenues benefiting the athletics program by decreasing the institutional financial support for athletics. The savings this measure creates will, over time and by mandate, be used to fund new faculty positions in academics. The first-year reallocation amount is projected to be $866,000, according to the university.

A&M-Commerce Dean of Students, Dr. Tomas Aguirre shared his sentiments on Facebook following the announcement of the vote totals.

Congrats to all of the students that participated in this important process. Whether you were in support of or against, you took the time to understand the facts, formulate your argument, and exercise your right to vote and be heard. I have always and will continue to advocate for you! All of you are amazing and an honor to work with and serve.
