First ETSU board chairman, Button, dies at 93

COMMERCE - Officials at Texas A&M University-Commerce are flying flags at half staff Wednesday in memory of alumnus and first chairman of the East Texas State Board of Regents, Garland Button. 

Born in McKinney, Button graduated from East Texas State Teachers College in 1938. He was appointed by the governor as chairman to university Board of Regents in 1969, on which he served for 16 years, receiving appointments from two other governors during that time.

Button passed away December 7 at the age of 93 following a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday in Dallas at The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration with a reception immediately following.  His obituary can be viewed at this link.
