SULPHUR SPRINGS - Approximately 55 jobs will be phased out over the next few months as part of cuts planned at Morningsstar Foods in Sulphur Springs.
The company has announced they will close their Cultured Specialties plant located at 500 Jackson Street. Production is expected to end by May 24.
The company also operates a larger extended-shelf-life plant located at 300 E. Industrial Blvd in Sulphur Springs, which is not affected by this change.
The company, in a release issued Thursday, expressed regret for how the decision will impact employees and the community. They note that working in a highly competitive marketplace means their business must run “in the most efficient way possible.”
The plant was first built in 1936 for the Carnation Company, which was under their control until Borden Milk bought the facility in 1979. The building became part of the Morningstar Foods division in 1999, and has produced sour cream and cottage cheese over the past four years.
