Lamar County prosecutors file new, lesser charge against Steed

PARIS - Charges have been reduced against a former Lamar County fire chief ahead of his August trial.

61-year-old Jack Steed, once a volunteer firefighter with the community of Powderly, now faces charges of misappropriation of fire department property from $1,500 to $20,000. He had originally been charged with theft of up to $100,000. The new charge reduces the possible sentence, if convicted, from as many as ten years to now only a maximum of two.

District Attorney Gary Young tells the Paris Newsthat Steed will be arraigned on the new charges next week.
