SULPHUR SPRINGS - Motorists who frequent the Highway 11 Loop south of Sulphur Springs will soon experience a stop light along the roadway in an effort to improve safety.
City and county officials have been insisting on the signal since the extension first opened in 2010, particularly following a deadly accident at the FM 2297 intersection (Arbala Road).
However, officials with the Texas Department of Transportation said traffic studies did not warrant a light. Until now, according to the Sulphur Springs News-Telegram.
With the opening of the new Sulphur Springs Middle School along the highway and therefore more traffic, plus numerous requests from the school, city, county commissioners and state lawmakers, TxDot recently announced they’ll install a traffic light at the Wildcat Way intersection. The project has a $70,000 price tag, with completion expected by late July.
Prior to the announcement, TxDot had only agreed to install reduced speed limit signs along the roadway.
