The Road to Expansion Over Lake Tawakoni Just Months Away

WEST TAWAKONI - With a surface area of 37,879 acres, Lake Tawakoni covers a vast area of East Texas, including three counties. Now, drivers who frequent the longest of the lakes' two bridges can look forward to some relief while crossing.

Tammy Sims with TxDot’s Greenville Office says they could go out for bids on the expansion of the nearly two-mile bridge that connects Hunt and Rains counties next month. Work could begin this fall.

It could take two years to add another two lanes of traffic to State Highway 276 over the lake, an estimated $45.9 million project. Crews will expand roughly 2.8 miles of the roadway from near the intersections of FM 751 to FM 513.

Officials are awaiting final word from the Texas Transportation Commissionto proceed with advertising for bids on the project.
