Coach Ernest Hawkins Released From Hospital

Danny Kambel

COMMERCE - Former Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions football Coach Ernest Hawkins is in recovery after a change of plans from a scheduled pacemaker procedure.

In an email from his daughter, LuAnn Bourland, ahead of the surgery doctors apparently found a heart rhythm disorder during an electrical study. According to his daughter, “a line leading to the control center of the heart had a short circuit” and the doctor “seared that line.” They believe this will solve the black outs and dizziness Hawkins had been experiencing.

Barring no issues, a check-up is scheduled in the next 6-8 weeks.

Bourland said her father was released from Baylor University Medical Center Tuesday night. So far he's getting around slowly and wearing out quickly, but seems in good spirits.

She said, "He is not real talkative (unless you talk football, hunting or fishing) but  he enjoys the attention!

Hawkins was diagnosed with the West Nile virus more than a week ago, which was initially thought to be the reason for complications he experienced a few days later, resulting in hospital treatment.
