City Council Set to Discuss Extra Eyes on School Bus Stops

The Greenville City Council intends to discuss whether to support the installation of cameras on local school buses. The council is scheduled to receive information this evening from Greenville Police Chief Daniel J. Busken on school bus stop-enforcement cameras during the work session set for 5 pm in the municipal building downtown.

In August the Greenville Independent School District board voted on a resolution in support of school bus arm-enforcement cameras. The cameras, if eventually installed, would capture drivers who illegally drive past buses when the stop sign is deployed, leading to the issuance of citations and fines.

The school district participated in a one-day survey of stop-arm violations, and noted that on October 28, 2011, drivers in the district reported 21 occasions where drivers illegally passed school buses.
