Want to start off 2015 on the right foot? Looking for a nice walk in the woods? A Walk in the Park – First Day Hike will be held at both Doctors Creek and South Sulphur Units of Cooper Lake State Park on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015.

The South Sulphur Unit will begin at 9:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. with hike, bike, run and geocaching on Coyote Run Trail. Jim Beach, State Park Peace Officer/Interpretive Guide for the South Sulphur Unit, invites the public to join the event.

"This 4.6 mile hike will take you through the hills and bottom lands surrounding Cooper Lake…. Be sure to bring your walking stick and water or snack foods to take with you. A camera and binoculars may come in handy as well," said Officer Jim Beach. "First Day Hike is a national initiative to get people outdoors and active. We will be joined by thousands of people from around the United States participating in this event. Make this a tradition for your family and 'come hike with us'."

The walking continues at Doctors Creek with a hike on Cedar Creek and North and South Loop Trails from 2 to 10 p.m. The meeting location is Pelican Point Day Use Area. The length of this hike is about one mile or 30-60 minutes and hikers are encouraged to bring walking stick, wear good walking shoes and bottle of water.

This event may be cancelled because of severe weather. Contact the park office for updated information (903) 945-5256 or (903) 395-3100.
