New calendar approved by Trustees

The 2015-2016 school calendar was recently approved by the Cooper Independent School District Board of Trustees.

“The committees like this one as it is basically the same as previous years,” said Cooper ISD Superintendent Denicia Hohenberger of the five calendar versions. This version was accepted unanimously 6-0. School will begin on Monday, Aug. 24 following a week of staff development, other major holidays include Monday-Friday, Nov. 23-27 for Thanksgiving, Monday, Dec. 21-Friday,Jan. 1 for Christmas, Monday, March 14-Friday, March 18 for Spring Break. The final day of school will be Friday, June 3, 2016.

The call for election was also approved for Saturday, May 9, 2015. Two full term (three year) positions will be up this year – those being Darren Braddy and Jeff Phifer along with one unexpired term formerly held by Danny Wall, who moved from the District in November. Phifer has been serving since 2009 and Braddy joined the following year. This Friday, Feb. 27 is the final day to sign up for the election.

The meeting opened with more student-related slideshows noting the events of the school year like visiting the Delta County Courthouse, registering to vote, Bi-District Dogette victory and much more. Superintendent Hohenberger said the partnership with the local Lions Club in establishing the Leos has been working out well.

Director of School Operations Doug Wicks said the new bus arrived and the Cooper Dogettes basketball team was the first to ride on it. He also received approval to consider purchase of an extended length van (which was in the budget). Other vans are nearing 200,000 miles. The Board also accepted the proposal to seek bids on the trim replacement at the JH/HS campus with bid deadline of March 12, 2015.

The Board had a lengthy discussion over investment options and (after Anita Moody excused herself) opted to accept the depository contract with Enloe State Bank.

The Board also agreed on the budget amendment for a previously completed capital project for repairs at the High School campus.

The Board of Trustees will meet again on Monday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at the administration building.
