Carol Taylor, the chairman of the Hunt County Historical Commission, says citizens of Hunt County reported seeing "airships" in the sky during the week of April 13-19, 1897. In fact, people throughout the middle part of the country reported seeing the mysterious aircraft. The appearance of the airships was unexplained, but it is believed they were dirigibles, which had existed for a quite some time prior to 1897, but had not been widely seen by most people. Reportedly, an aircraft crashed in Wise County and the body of a "Martian" was found in the wreckage and buried.
