Volunteer Fire Fighters Debut Engine 31

There is a new red vehicle in town. Only this one goes zero to 60 mph “in about two days.” However it was not designed for speed – it was designed as a powerful tool for Delta County volunteer fire fighters. Engine 31 is an apparatus that was purchased through a joint inter-local agreement between the City of Cooper and the Delta County Emergency Services District.

The bright, shiny new truck seats five very comfortably in the four door cab complete with communication headsets. It has digital gauges to monitor pressure. The sides of the truck are equipped with utility drawers so each device has its own location. The rolling doors open to reveal special built in compartments to hold landscaping tools such as chainsaws and trimmers to assist in the fire fighting situations. Stored at the back of the Spartan brand truck are ladders with various height ranges.

It took a year and a half of planning and designing to make this wish a reality for the volunteers of Delta County. The pin striping includes “In God We Trust” and an emblem marking it “custom built for Cooper Fire Department.” The lights are bright enough to conduct a manhunt, and it wouldn’t be complete without a Bulldog standing guard nestled in between the words, “pride, honor, integrity.”

According to the department’s release, the new apparatus will significantly increase response capabilities, and be used in place of front-line apparatus that is currently over 20 years old. The new fire engine will serve both the City of Cooper, as well as all of the incorporated and unincorporated areas of Delta County

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program is one of the most highly competitive nationwide federal grant programs, of which just a small fraction of the more than 11,000 applications received annually are funded.  Included in the $96,000 award, which was written in house, is a five percent applicant match.
