Parasites Are Still Sickening Texans; Health Officials Are Still Baffled

The cause of a months-long cyclospora outbreak in Texas is still a mystery.

Almost five months after an outbreak of cyclospora parasites started making Texans sick, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still don’t know exactly why.

Cyclosporiasis is a food-and-waterborne illness; CDC officials say the root of the outbreak that has affected nearly 1,000 people in 40 states is fresh produce. But exactly what that produce is is still baffling health officials.

Texas, New York, North Carolina and Florida are the hardest-hit states. An outbreak map posted by Food Safety News indicates as many as 163 cases have occurred in these four states.
