Texas' 5th Congressional District will soon be up fro grabs.

Republican State Sen. Bryan Hughes says he will not seek to replace U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling in the fifth Congressional District.

Hensarling announced his retirement from the U.S. House last week, and speculation about who would run for the Republican’s open seat started almost immediately. State Sen. Bob Hall has already announced that he will not run for the spot. Earlier today Hughes announced he would not either. In a statement, Hughes said he can best serve Texas in the state Senate, and that "now is not the time f  or me to leave."

The first serious contender to enter the race for the 5th District seat is former state Rep. Kenneth Sheets. Sheets was a Republican who served Dallas County between 2011 and January of this year. He announced his bid Monday.
