A 44-year-old Sulphur Springs woman was found dead in a drainage ditch early this morning. The cause of death is being determined.
Local police have identified the body as being that of Martha Patricia Torres-Regalado.
Acting Sulphur Springs Police Chief Jason Ricketson said that at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Torres-Regalado and another woman were in a vehicle that became stranded near Easy Street due to high waters from heavy rainfall. Ricketson said one of the women went to a nearby apartment complex to get help, and when she returned to the vehicle, Torres-Regalado was gone.
Officials say that a search last night was unsuccessful, but that on Thursday morning, her body was found in a drainage ditch behind a restaurant on College Street.
Justice of the Peace B.J. Teer pronounced Torres-Regalado dead at the scene. Officials say that an autopsy has been ordered, but that foul play in the woman’s death is not suspected.
