The fatal shooting happened near Ranch View Townhomes, a large complex on Greenville's west side.

Officers responded twice to calls from Ranch View Townhomes, with the second call reporting shots fired.

An unidentified Greenville man is dead after being shot by police Monday night near a Greenville apartment complex. A City of Greenville news release described a series of incidents leading up to the fatal shooting.

Greenville Police first responded to an incident at the Ranch View Townhomes, 5700 Industrial Drive, shortly before 6 p.m. Officers responded to a disturbance involving residents of the complex, the release said.

Police left, however, later that night, just before 9:30 p.m., officers returned to the apartments in response to a report of shots fired, the release said. Police found a man shooting both a rifle and a handgun, officials said.

During the incident, the man raised the handgun at police, the release said. Officers responded by shooting and killing the man, officials said.

The Texas Rangers have begun an investigation, which is policy for officer-involved shootings. On Feb. 10, officials released the age of the man, 49.

Greenville Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to call the Greenville Police Department at (903) 457-2900.
