With some NE Texas roads already icy, region braces for more wintry precipitation

The National Weather Service has extended the Winter Storm Warning through 6 a.m. Thursday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across Northeast Texas this morning, with temperatures in the 20s and freezing rain on the way. Today, we expect high temperatures around 30 and we have an 80 percent probability of freezing rain mixed with sleet and snow. Parts of the region could receive about a quarter-inch of ice accumulation. Sleet could accumulate up to half an inch.

Currently, Northeast Texas roads are already icy to varying degrees. The State of Texas website drivetexas.org indicates roads particularly icy west of a Honey Grove to Commerce to Cumby to Lone Oak line. Bridges over Lake Fork and Lake Tawakoni are icy. Multiple vehicle accidents have been reported since wintry precipitation began yesterday afternoon. State officials are urging people to avoid driving if at all possible.

Texas A&M University-Commerce and Paris Junior College are closed today. Area public schools along with many public offices and agencies are also closed today. The City of Commerce has announced there will be no trash pickup today. Most public offices are using their Facebook pages to announce closures and schedule changes.

Tonight across Northeast Texas, low temperatures in the mid 20. We have a 50 to 60 percent chance for wintry precipitation overnight, with more ice accumulating. Wednesday, highs in the low 30s, with more wintry precipitation expected tomorrow as well. The National Weather Service has extended the Winter Storm Warning until 6 a.m. Thursday morning.
