Man dies after his SUV swept off the road by flood waters on I-30 service road

friday morning newscast graphic

The incident happened along Brushy Creek, just east of Royse City.

Flooding from this week’s heavy rains claimed the life of a man in southwestern Hunt County on Wednesday.

Late Wednesday morning, Royse City police along with area fire departments were responding to calls of multiple vehicles stranded in high water. They were stuck along the Interstate 30 service roads near I-30 and the intersection with FM 1565. That’s between Royse City and Caddo Mills, not far from the Red Line Raceway. Drivers on the north service road told first responders that they saw a silver SUV get washed off the road and sink into a creek. Brushy Creek flows underneath I-30 near that intersection.

Hunt County Sheriff’s deputies along with Texas Department of Public safety officers began a search for the vehicle. The search was impeded by high and fast-moving waters. Eventually, a swift water rescue team from the Cash Fire Department found the SUV about 15 to 20 feet underwater on the south side of the interstate. The vehicle turned out to be empty. A man’s body was found downstream nearby.

Royse City police say the victim was an elderly man, but his identity is being withheld pending positive identification.
