KETR's Severe Weather Coverage, Sports Broadcasts Among Best In Texas

On April 16, the second annual Texas Broadcast News Awards recognized the Texas television and radio broadcast stations that produced the top news content in 2022.

From Amarillo to Corpus Christi and El Paso to Texarkana, broadcast news stations throughout the Lone Star State work hard to keep Texans informed about the important stories that impact our lives.

Since 2022, the Texas Association of Broadcasters has stewarded the annual competition designed to identify the stories, shows, reporters, anchors, and contributors from those broadcasters that exemplify the best that Texas has to offer.

This year, 88.9 KETR was judged to have aired the "best continuing coverage" of a news story among our non-major-market peers by way of our reporting of a live tornado event that affected KETR's listeners in November of 2022. Our Lions broadcast team of Charlie Chitwood, Brock Callaway, and producer Ryan Fulkerson worked together to create a broadcast of the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions men's basketball team on the road at the University of Texas which was named the division's "best sports play-by-play" in the state. And in the category of 'best sports talk show' among stations outside of major markets, 88.9 KETR's The Big Friday Night Sports Program, anchored by Ryan Fulkerson, was awarded the top prize.

Jerrod Knight, KETR's General Manager, notes that the awards are wonderful, but what they mean is more important. "We feel honored and delighted. The fact is that KETR can't really plan content around accolades - we don't set out to create award-winning work. Our plan, as always, is to offer the best and most relevant product that we can as often and as consistently as we can. But when the judges of this contest took note of our work and chose to recognize it this way, it lent confidence to our processes and our approach, and we're grateful to the TAB for the opportunity to submit our work for consideration."

A complete list of statewide winners among all categories in both the radio and television competitions is found at the TAB's website.

88.9 KETR's journalism and programming is supported by listeners and donors who contribute annually and monthly to maintain memberships. Information can be found here.
