Thousands of Northeast Texas remain without electrical service as another round of wintry precipitation is expected to strike the region Tuesday night.
Most of Northeast Texas recorded temperatures in the negative single digits Tuesday morning. Temperatures are expected to remain in the teens through the overnight hours, but the National Weather Service has forecast about 4 inches of new snow and sleet accumulations for the region through Wednesday. In the KETR service area, northern Fannin and Lamar counties could experience accumulations of 6 inches or greater, while areas along and south of the Interstate 30 corridor might get around 2 inches of new snow and ice, according to NWS projections.
Cold, rather than precipitation, is the primary safety concern for those without electricity. Widespread outages across the region began early Monday morning, and many households across Northeast Texas have had little or no power since then.
An estimated 3.5 million Texans were without electricity at their homes, as the state's power grid, which serves about three-fourths of Texas, failed to meet the challenges of severe cold weather that began Sunday night. The energy macro-systems monitoring website, poweroutages.us, reported that more than 12,000 households in Hunt County alone remained without electrical service as of late Tuesday afternoon.
Warming stations have been established around the region, although many of the facilities that typically host sheltering opportunities during cold weather are themselves without electricity.
