  • The City of Sulphur Springs is applying for a federal grant to develop the former Thermo mine site located on the southeast side of the city. The Sulphur Springs News-Telegram reports the Texarkana-based Ark-Tex Council of Governments is assisting with the effort. The city’s proposal includes a refurbishment of rail lines operated by the Northeast Texas Rural Rail Transportation District (NETEX). The Thermo site is one of several former mining locations in Northeast Texas looking to participate in the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Build Back Better program. A similar former mining site in Mount Pleasant could connected to the Thermo site along improved rail lines as part of a combined commercial development. The Thermo mine produced lignite, a low-grade form of coal. It was open from the late seventies until it closed in 2017. The city acquired the land in late 2019.
  • A ceremony honoring the life of Jonathan Price has been scheduled for this Sunday evening in Wolfe City. Price was a Wolfe City resident and municipal employee who was shot to death by a Wolfe City police officer during an incident last October. The officer was fired by the city and charged with murder by state officials in the days following the incident. Former Wolfe City Police Department officer Shaun Lucas remains in custody at the Collin County Jail on $1 million bond. Lucas has pled not guilty and is scheduled to go on trial next May. The event “Remembering Jonathan Price” is set for 6 p.m. Sunday at Mount Carmel Cemetery, on County Road 4814, about a mile off of State Highway 11 in Wolfe City.
