Lions three weeks, six games away from LSC playoffs

There are just three weeks of regular season play remaining for the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions Women’s Soccer team. With six games remaining on the schedule, the Lions are 8-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the LSC.

The Lions have won games against conference opponents Eastern New Mexico University and Texas Woman’s University, tied with West Texas A&M University, and lost games against Midwestern State University in overtime and Angelo State University.

The Lions went 2-0 last week with wins over Texas Woman’s and Oklahoma Christian University. The two wins came by a combined score of 8-2 and ended a streak of three games without a win (0-2-1). In the 6-2 win over Oklahoma Christian, six different Lions scored and eight different Lions registered at least a point.

Savannah Henderson, a freshman forward from Mabank, Texas, was named to the Lone Star Conference’s weekly Women’s Offensive Team after tallying the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win over Texas Woman’s and assisting on the first four goals for the Lions in a 6-2 blowout win over Oklahoma Christian. The four assists set a new career mark for the freshman and it was the second time this season she has recorded four points in a game. Henderson is tied for the LSC lead in goals (6) and assists (5) and leads the LSC with 17 points on the year.

Brionna Minde, a senior forward from Richardson, Texas, also was named to the weekly Women’s Offensive Team. She has 2 goals this season, is tied for the LSC lead in assists (5), and has 9 points total this season.

Catie Hyde, a senior defender from Overland Park, Kansas, helped the Lions defense give up only two goals last week including a shutout win over Texas Woman’s. The Lion defense only surrendered 5.5 shots per game last week and 3.5 shots on goal per game. Hyde and the back line held the opposition to a .182 shooting percentage in the two games this past week.

Vicky Back, a redshirt freshman forward from York, England, was named to the LSC’s weekly Women’s Defensive Team.

The Lions travel to Midwestern State and Angelo this weekend, who currently sit atop the LSC. A&M-Commerce faces Midwestern Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 pm in a battle that could determine second place in the conference. The Lions’ game against Angelo State comes at 1 pm on Saturday, Oct. 19.
