The effort to move a controversial Confederate statue from the Lamar County Courthouse in Paris will have to wait.
The Lamar County Commissioners’ Court met this morning to discuss whether to petition the Texas Historical Commission for permission to move a century-old statue depicting major Confederate figures.
The five-member commission has been split with two votes in favor of applying to move the monument and two against. The unknown is the opinion of Precinct 4 commissioner Keith Mitchell, who was absent from today’s meeting.
With Mitchell absent, the commission remained deadlocked and the statue will not be moved. County Judge Chuck Superville is in favor of moving the monument. He said this morning that the monument is hurting the image of Paris and Lamar County and is keeping the county from growing economically.
