Commerce – Texas A&M University-Commerce has plans for the future of historic Mayo Hall. The building was built in the 1930's as part of projects with the Roosevelt Administration, but now sits mostly empty and unused. A&M-Commerce president Dr. Keith McFarland wants to see life in the building again.
MCFARLAND: I really want to do everything I can to keep that building, and I'd love to bring it back to life.
The plan is to offer the private sector an opportunity to lease the land and building for as low as one or ten dollars a year for the next 25 years, with an opportunity to make money with the property during that time.
MCFARLAND: What we would expect of them, then, is to come in, remodel (Mayo Hall) making it into faculty apartments.
The University planned to accept proposals through the beginning of June, and McFarland said he expects to know more of the future of Mayo Hall by the Fall semester.
