Groundbreaking for the new A. C. Williams Elementary School in Commerce took place across the street from the school site, inside the gym at Commerce Middle School.

Wyman Williams, who chaired the bond issue committee, said the new third through fifth grade building will keep Commerce attractive to business and families, it demonstrates proactive planning and investment in the future, and it positions the Commerce school district for planned and effective growth.

CISD Superintendent Mike Roberts was applauded for saying the groundbreaking was symbolic of the partnership between the Commerce school district and the community.

CISD Board of Trustees President Debbie Aikin thanked the voters, the bond issue committee, teachers and staff, and fellow board members of continuing the legacy left by A.C. Williams.

Completion is projected in the fall of 2009 for the 14 million dollar facility.
