Arson blamed on multiple grass fires in region

By Scott Harvey

– A suspect is in custody on suspicion of arson for multiple grass fires that occurred in Lamar County this week.

61-year-old Nolan Kevin Mitchell was spotted close to one of the fires just after it had started. Firefighters notified the Lamar County Sheriff's Office and Mitchell was later arrested. He's been charged with arson and driving while intoxicated.

Arson is also suspected in a series of fires that erupted within a one hour span near Yantis. Investigators say the fires began around 9:30 p.m. Thursday on Wood County Road 1700.

Three white males are sought. Reports say they were spotted in the proximity of the fires, driving a navy blue or black Hummer-like SUV.
