Local skaters invited to group fundraiser

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The Commerce Skatepark Project is hoping to raise roughly $5,000 during this weekend's skate competition at City Park.

The Organization's Barbara Lenington says events feature a Game of Skate (equivalent to the Game of Horse in basketball), a High Ollie and a Long Ollie. There will also be a special obstacle course for new skaters.

The group is looking to create an all cement skatepark, estimated to cost as much as $200,000.

"The Skate Park is really a great idea because it's some place you can take your kids and they can get their exercise. And it's drug free."

Pizza and drinks will be available, as well as prizes for skaters. Admission for skaters and spectators is a $10 donation to the Skatepark Project. Registration starts at 12 p.m. with the first event beginning just after 1 p.m. Saturday.

Lenington says the organization has raised approximately $5,000 to date, which once accomplished, will receive a $5,000 match from the City of Commerce. She says the Skatepark Project recently received 501c3 status, which allows the organization to apply for major grants like the Tony Hawk Grant worth up to $25,000. Following Bois d'Arc Bash, the Skatepark Project plans to start a corporate campaign to raise funds from local businesses.
