Alice says don't take 'The D Train'

Alice thought The D Train was a comedy, but somewhere along the way it went off the rails.

This week on Movie Picks, Alice reviews Far From the Madding Crowd, The D Train, 5 Flights Up, and Bravetown.

Far From the Madding Crowd, an adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel of the same name, stars Carey Mulligan, as the independent and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene, and Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, and Tom Sturridge, as her three male suitors. Alice thought the cinematography was wonderful, and she would recommend this movie.

The D Train is the latest movie from Jack Black, but don't get too excited because Alice was not impressed. What started out as a comedy, also featuring Jeffrey Tambor and James Marsden, took a dark twist that smothered the humor. Alice does not recommend seeing this movie.

5 Flights Up is a smaller movie starring Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton as a married couple who are trying to sell their fifth floor walk-up apartment in Brooklyn. Cynthia Nixon plays their neice and realtor who gets the bidding war started. Alice does recommend this, but don't expect much.

Bravetown is an odd mix of patriotic and dance movie set in North Dakota. Lucas Till stars as a troubled 17-year-old sent to live with his father in ND. Laura Dern and Josh Duhamel also star.

You can hear Movie Picks with Alice Reese every Friday at 4:50 and 5:50 PM during All Things Considered on your station, or right here online.
