In June 2013, Carey's sister Patricia met Sgt. Jeff Haines of the Hunt Co. Sheriff's Office. Patricia says Haines posed a theory: that Carey's father buried her under cemetery plots reserved for his wife and grandchildren.

While Carey's family dismissed that idea, one part of it sounded familiar.
