State awards local schools with HVAC money

AUSTIN - Eight Northeast Texas school districts have been awarded over $3 million toward the replacement of old, inefficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

More than 400 school districts applied for the Texas Cool Schools grant program. However, even with the additional funding, only a portion of the applications were awarded grants. State Comptroller Susan Combs announced the funding allocations earlier this month.

Recipients include Blue Ridge, Celeste, Crandall, Cumby, Sam Rayburn, Savoy, Tom Bean and Wylie, with each school receiving at least $147,000 toward repairs. The awards are as follows:

Blue Ridge ISD: $189,650.00

Celeste ISD: $610,940.00

Crandall ISD: $200,927.00

Cumby ISD: $147,140.00

Sam Rayburn ISD: $160,200.00

Savoy ISD: $429,148.13

Tom Bean ISD: $982,140.00

Wylie ISD: $330,000.00

Per program rules, grants were awarded on a competitive basis, with scoring criteria based on factors including enrollment, district property wealth, the age of current equipment and the estimated energy savings available from new equipment. School districts that applied for Texas Cool Schools grants but did not receive funding are encouraged to seek alternate funding sources for identified HVAC projects.
