SULPHUR SPRINGS - Friday marks the final day to vote in the Clorox Power a Bright Future campaign in which school districts, including two locally, can earn thousands in grant dollars for various projects.
As of Monday, Sulphur Springs ISD ranked second in their particular category among 514 schools. They are pursuing a $50,000 grant for new playground equipment at the current middle school campus, which will house third and fourth graders next year once the new Middle School is complete.
The District’s Sherry Chester is heading the effort. She says, “Once the middle school moves from its current location out on Bell St. out to the new bypass, then all the third and fourth grade students will come together for the first time every at the current Middle School. However, there is not a stitch of playground equipment there. So that is our focus.”
As of early Monday, Sulphur Springs was just over 2,000 votes behind the leader at nearly 88,300 total votes. Chester says the support has been unreal.
“It has been phenomenal, and actually quite overwhelming and somewhat humbling all at the same time. We have unity in this community unlike anything I have ever seen."
The Paris ISD is seeking funds to upgrade wiring in their buildings and to purchase new computers for Crocket Intermediate School. Votes received, however, were less than 1,000 as of Monday morning. The leader in their particular category had more than 97,000 votes.
